Overview

The Dairy Manufacturers’ Sustainability Council (DMSC) provides a Network for dairy manufacturing personnel who are involved in environment- or sustainability-related roles.

The Mission of the DMSC is to provide opportunities for all of its representatives (members and associate members):

  • to discuss and share issues, with each other and with appropriate specialists;
  • to gain knowledge; and
  • to extend greater understanding of sustainability within the Australian based dairy manufacturing companies.

Current Membership of the DMSC (at the company rather than at the individual level) covers 75% of all dairy processing in Australia.  The representatives of these processing companies include personnel with corporate (and international) sustainability responsibilities, as well as more operating site-based, environment or energy-related responsibilities.

As an organisation, the DMSC evolved in 2007 from the Dairy Manufacturers’ Environmental Forum (DMEF), itself set up in 1995.  Given the then increasing pressure towards environmental sustainability, the DMEF considered that an extension of its environment-only focus was necessary.  As a result, the DMSC was launched to replace the DMEF in March 2007, at the Sustainability Victoria* offices in Melbourne.

Sustainability Victoria, together with EPA Victoria*, remain as Associate Members of the DMSC.  Associate membership is open to non-commercial organisations, such as government bodies, industry associations, research organisations, or to other interested parties (latter on application).  Administration of the DMSC, including via coordination of its Forums and hosting of this website, is provided by Dairy Innovation Australia.
